I spent the middle of last week at the Telarus Partner Summit with 300+ partners & vendors from around the country. It was a very stimulating event with everyone debating where "cloud" would lead us all to and whether we'd be able to maintain reasonable margins.

The general consensus was that we'd all do just fine if we can get away from line item pricing and the "race to zero" in exchange for selling bundled solutions.

I couldn't agree more which is why Telecom Association is introducing a brand new association tomorrow for partners and vendors interested in creating, selling and even billing "cloud solution bundles". Everyone who gets this newsletter will get the new cloud broker newsletter.

NEW CLOUD BROKER ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCED TOMORROW,  JULY 1ST

In conducting interviews for TA's "How Converged is Converged Enough" expert panel, I've become convinced that an era of cloud resale is dawning that will rival the local phone company resale era that exploded in 1996 when the local phone loop was deregulated.

Current channel partners representing different vendors and earning commissions won't be completely put out of the mid-market and enterprise business but if you're selling in the SMB space and you're not selling cloud bundles I'm not sure you're going to survive the next 3-years on ala-carte partner commissions.

Not to worry though as the new cloud broker association will exist to educate both consultants and end-users about the benefits of acquiring business technology in managed and billed "cloud bundles". 

Not convinced? Think about all the hosted VoIP providers out there now? How many of them are there - a thousand or more? They are the new cloud brokers. The ones that figure our how to service & invoice any cloud solution a customer can think to need will grow and do just fine. 

If you're a partner today you need to learn how to become a cloud broker or sell for one to survive in the SMB space.

At Telecom Association we really just do two things: 1) give technology vendors a platform to explain how they help partners help our business clients, and 2) sort through all the "blah, blah, blah, we're the best" vendor marketing noise to identify who really are the recommended experts partners need to be talking to for any technology category.

How Do We Do It?  With my "channel partner ears" on I personally listen to countless vendor boasts and partner sales stories trying to separate fact from fiction - then TA documents and sorts what appears to be true. Once we figure out "who's best" in every category we share it with our members in our "TA Recommended Solution Provider Directory" at www.TArecommended.com

Getting the raw information that we sort through every year to flow in from vendors and partners is the tricky part. In the past we've used ballots and reviews. This year we're trying out a couple fun contests that we're launching this week at the annual Telarus Partner Summit in Park City.

Telecom Association is sponsoring two contests at Telarus Partner Summit 2015 this week specifically designed to help TA's 4,000+ members 1) remember which vendors make the most useful announcements at the event, and 2) find a peer Recommended Expert to help them solve any industry challenge they are having. Anyone can compete in the two contests.

WHO DO YOU RECOMMEND? CONTEST
 - TA is bringing 250 "TA Recommended", "Channel Expert" & "Solution Expert" buttons that look like this 



to TPS15 this week and encouraging attendees to give the buttons to other attendees (partner or vendor) that they recommend and/or believe to be an expert so other attendees will then ask the button wearers, "So what's your expertise and who recommended you?"  

Button givers will be encouraged to document their recommendations at this link or by calling 251-206-7300. Individuals & firms with the most recommendations at the end of the event will receive special recognition in TA's review of the event at www.TPS15.com.

WHO SAID IT? VENDOR HEADLINE CONTEST - Throughout the TPS15 event TA will be accepting vendor headlines & announcements that are made to attendees. After the event TA will separate the announcements from the vendor names and then survey attendees to see who can match the most headlines to the vendor "Who Said It?"

Attendees with the best recall will receive special recognition in TA's review of the event & vendor sponsored prizes.

Depending on how well the two contests are received, after the TPS15 event TA will roll them out to all TA members.



WHAT'S THE STORY WITH MEGAPATH AFTER SELLING OFF TWO-THIRDS OF THE COMPANY?

After selling off their Covad network and then their managed services business over the past six months (as well as shedding quite a few managers), conventional wisdom seemed to be that MegaPath was getting ready for some final acquisition to Vonage, Birch or a cableco.

Another Reason Verizon Should Stick to "Dumb Pipes"  Click this link to hear a Verizon rep leave a voice mail indicating that an "ineligible bundle" discount has been discovered and removed which will increase the customer's the Verizon bill. No account number is given in the unfortunate event the customer has more than one Verizon account to keep track of (which she does) and the only call back number is 1-800-Verizon. This is a great example of how the big carriers should stick to delivering bit internet "dumb pipes" and leave the billing of voice traffic and "bundles" to companies that can spell "c-u-s-t-o-m-e-r s-e-r-v-i-c-e". No Excuse Not to Create a Custom URL Shortener for Your Company I didn't start my day wanting to stop using Bit.ly and switching to a customized URL shortener. That was decided for me by our our new TA Weekend Magazine eblast provider who refuses to blast any email with a Bitly or TinyURL link in it due to reported "deliver & SPAM issues". When we asked for a referral they sent us to VanityURLshorteners.com, which enthusiastically recommended Yourls.org. Two hours later TA has it's own custom TA1.us domain shortener up and working. Increase your reader's "link confidence" by only using your own URL shortener (and not letting anyone else use it!) 4/27/15

 

Does Your Website Pass Google's New Mobile-Friendly Test? Stop whatever you're doing, go to this webpage and type in your web address URL. If Google does not rate you as "mobile-friendly" you may find that Google's "Mobilegeddon" (which happened a week ago) is about to slash the number of prospective customers Google has previously sent to your website. If you haven't got the IT programming budget to maintain two websites (one for mobile users and one for all others) don't panic. You may need to redo your website from scratch with a new "mobile-friendly" WordPress template or similar but the good news is that doing so is both cheap and fairly easy. TA is moving all the content from our www.TelecomAssociation.com site to www.tanews.us. We've chosen to use the "all-in-one" content distribution platform NationBuilder since we have a large database to manage. Most smaller companies will be able to do just fine with a GoDaddy website using a GoDaddy WordPress template that comes free with any GoDaddy hosting account. 4/27/15 

 

Need Affordable Website & Coding Help? I contracted with Reece Young of First Class Code this morning to install the Yourls.org Custom URL Shortener code on our new www.TA1.us domain since I had no interest in fooling around with the PHP or mySQL coding requirements myself. I ordered up the URL and hosting with GoDaddy, provided the account access info to Reece who had me up and running in less than an hour. He did the job faster and for the same price as I was getting quoted from overseas Elancer's. BTW, I found Reece searching Craigslist with the terms PHP and mySQL. 4/27/15

Check New Domains for Blacklisting B4 Publishing TA bought the domain TAnews.net for this new site a month ago only to learn later the domain was used by a blacklisted organization some 12 years ago. Even though the domain had been unused for a decade, when I started referencing the URLs in emails, about 5% of my emails got caught in Spamhaus blocking traps. It took several weeks and a lot of luck to get the URL "unblacklisted". Best practice is to never re-use someone's old domain. Check Archive.org to see if a domain was ever used. Here's some best practice links if your domain gets tangled up with blacklisting Link1, Link2, Link3, Link4  Props to Chris Kolbenschlag from our eBlast vendor Bronto.com for getting this fixed! 3/27/15

Birch Buys Globalinx for an undisclosed amount. Peter Radizeski quotes a Globalinx letter which suggests that there's no longer a viable market for telecom resellers. The TMC people I know who went to Globalinx after their 2010 acquisition of TMC mostly left within a year. If Globalinx had in mind to "go legit" with real telecom agents (Globalinx was mostly a MLM shop with 5Linx before TMC) it didn't work. Globalinx' message to agents states they'll continue to get paid through Birch and I've heard nothing bad from any agent of a company previously bought by Birch including Cbeyond in 2014 for $323m and then Ernest and Lightyear in 2013 so it's expected that this acquisition is a good thing for Globalinx agents. http://bit.ly/1CgkJm6 3/27/15

Megapath Gets Lean & Mean? In January Megapath divested itself of the 2,000 CO network it acquired from Covad in 2010. In February Megapath sold its managed services business for $150m. This leaves Megapath with its cloud & Broadsoft phone business to compete against the likes of Vonage & Birch. Will Megapath expand or sell? Rob Powell seems to think Megapath's investors are ready to cash out. Megapath names top partners. Dan Foster is gone. 3/27/15
